Garith, don’t get me wrong, Linux (Ubuntu or other distro) is more powerful and enables you to do more things than other OS’s. The thing is, if you want to do more than the basics (web, email, media), you’d better have good knowledge of Unix (shell commands and file structure at least). Else you may end up configuring your system by blindly copying commands and scripts from Linux forums.

In other words, for advance use of Ubuntu, you need to learn Unix.

For basic use, even grandma can go for Ubuntu.

You say in your post that Ubuntu should be okay if all you’re going to use your computer for is basic stuff, but you kind of miss the point that while Ubuntu is very easy for new users, it is by no means a stripped down version of Liunx.

To get a basic idea of how far beyond basic computing Ubuntu can be taken, have a look at the short film “Elephant’s Dream”. You can download and watch it for free at elephantsdream.org. It was done entirely with open source software, and the Linux distribution that held it all together was Ubuntu.

Just keep in mind that either way that you decide to go (That is, except the upgrading back to XP), expect to take about 3-6 months (or longer) to adjust to the point that you are comportable with the system that you land upon.

Or in Ubuntu. You can do all of that and more for free (but with more work involved, as OS X is made to _just_ work. Trust me on this, I’ve done some normally loop hole-filled things (in both Ubuntu and Windows) on OS X and it is a weird thing to experience.) in addition to the FOSS support base. Also, in 8.04, you can download it for free and install it within Windows. Not to mention, it looks much better than previous versions.

As a side benefit, if you happen to like some Windows-only programs, there is the possible option of running them within WINE under Ubunutu http://www.winehq.org
